Why does your phone automatically rotate its screen? How does your smartwatch accurately count your steps? And how does a car airbag deploy in time during a collision? Behind all this lies a micron-sized "heart"—the MEMS accelerometer.

The theoretical foundation of the MEMS accelerometer is Newton's second law of motion. Inside, it consists of micron-scale springs and a proof mass. When an object experiences acceleration, the proof mass displaces accordingly, changing the capacitance. By reading this tiny change through a dedicated integrated circuit, the acceleration value can be precisely calculated.

Its greatest charm lies in its "small size, big capabilities". Manufactured using semiconductor microfabrication technology, this sensor achieves miniaturization, low power consumption, and low cost. Today, the smallest three-axis MEMS accelerometer has a package size of only **1.2mm × 0.8mm × 0.55mm**, smaller than a grain of rice.

From the smartphone in your hand and the wearable on your wrist to automotive electronics that ensure safety, drones that fly through the air, and condition monitoring of industrial equipment, MEMS accelerometers are everywhere. They constantly sense tilt, vibration, shock, and changes in orientation, giving devices a sense of "touch" and "balance."

By 2027, global annual sales of MEMS accelerometers are expected to exceed **2.4 billion units**. This sensor, miniaturized to fit on a fingertip, silently drives every precise movement in the age of intelligence.
